Thinking about a cabinet refresh? Prep is 80% of the finish. Painting is only 20%.
One small mistake can ruin the look. Good prep delivers a smooth, factory-style finish.
If you want pro results without hiring a crew, this guide will help.

For full refinishing services, visit our Cabinet Painting Page.

1. Disassembly & Labeling: Start Organized

Good prep starts with order.

Steps:
• Create a simple map of your kitchen layout.
• Remove each door and label it with painter’s tape.
• Keep hinges and screws in labeled bags.
• Photograph cabinets before removal.

This prevents mix-ups when reassembling.

2. Deep Cleaning: Remove Hidden Grease

Paint sticks only to clean surfaces.

Do this:
• Use TSP or a strong degreaser.
• Scrub doors, frames, and edges.
• Rinse with clean water.
• Dry fully before sanding.

If water beads on the surface, grease is still present.

3. First Sanding: Scuff for Better Bond

You’re not stripping wood—just scuffing.

Steps:
• Use 120-grit on flat areas.
• Hand-sand corners and profiles.
• Remove shine until it looks matte.
• Vacuum and wipe with a tack cloth.

This step ensures primer adhesion.

4. Repairs: Fill, Patch & Smooth

Fix dents and grain patterns now.

For oak: Use grain filler for a smooth, modern look.
For scratches or holes: Apply wood filler and sand with 220-grit.

The smoother the prep, the smoother the finish.

5. Priming: The Real Bonding Layer

Primer is your anchor coat.

Best choices:
• Oil-based primer – strong bond, blocks stains.
• Shellac primer (BIN) – great for tannins, fast drying.
• High-bond water-based primer – low odor, great adhesion.

Apply thin coats. Let each coat dry fully.

6. Final Sanding: The Pro Secret

Now you get the glass-smooth finish.

Steps:
• Use 400-grit for a soft, even feel.
• Don’t break through the primer.
• Wipe off dust with a tack cloth.

Your cabinets are now ready for paint.
